After an ASW exercise with Scamp south of Manila Bay, Carpenter arrived at Subic Bay on 24 September to have her ECM antenna repaired. Starting in January 1963, the destroyer carried out numerous coaching workout routines off Hawaii, including submarine goal providers and a training mission with Canadian frigates HMCS Beacon Hill and Jonquiere. In November, the destroyer began receiving services from Prairie (Ad-15) in preparation for a restricted availability, which commenced 14 December, during which Carpenter obtained rudder repairs and new 4-bladed screws. That commenced on 9 September, when the destroyer got underway for the Far East. After a last sequence of inspections, she received underway for the South China Sea on three June.
